How can you get child support if you have full custody?

If you have full custody of your child, you may be wondering whether you will still have to pay child support. Child support exists to help the child's needs be met, and there are plenty of things that a non-custodial parent can do that would benefit the child—and hence, qualify as "child-related expenses".

Some people mistakenly believe that they cannot get child support if they have full custody because they don't need it. However, this isn't true: in most states, only a portion of your income and/or assets are considered when determining how much support you might owe. For example, if your expenses exceed your income, the court could decide that you need more money than it would consider reasonable to cover those expenses, and so it would order you to pay more than the minimum amount required under the circumstances.

If you have full custody, the other parent is still obligated to pay child support. If you are in Utah, please call the family law attorneys below, they can help you with child support.
