How is child support determined when a parent has no income?
It
may seem strange, but parents with no income are still required to provide
child support; child support payments can be made through a state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. TANF is a type of welfare program
that allows families who have no income to get help paying for their basic
needs and housing costs. The amount a family receives through TANF correlates
with the number of people in the family and the parent's income level if any.
The calculation is based on the state's TANF guidelines.
In Utah, the court will use the child support worksheet and impute an income to you at the rate you would be able to earn even if you are unemployed. When you need legal help with child support, please call this law firm, they do free child support consultations.
