What steps can be taken to repair bad credit?

Bad credit is something that can happen to almost anyone and it's usually the result of a series of bad decisions. It can be life-changing, too. Bad credit hinders your ability to get loans, mortgages, and even some jobs, which is why it's important to repair your credit as soon as possible. There are a number of mistakes people make that cause their credit score to drop and many of them are simple fixes. For example, if you're late on a payment, contact the creditor as soon as possible and let them know so that you can set up a new payment plan. Or, if you've taken out multiple loans or lines of credit at once, try to consolidate them into one single loan so that you only have one payment to worry about. Another option is to pay off one loan at a time starting with the smallest amount until they're all paid off.

A good way to begin repairing your credit is by contacting the three major agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and asking them how you can improve your score. Each agency has its own process for raising your score but they'll give you all of the information you need to get started. In addition, check with your local bank to see if they offer any credit repair programs or free services (credit unions often do). Finally, go to annualcreditreport.com and pull your credit reports annually. This is free to pull each year.
