How do I find out if a will is under probate?

If you want to find out whether a will is under probate, the first stop is usually the District Court (or county recorder’s office - depending on where you live), but they might not be able to tell you that directly. In most jurisdictions, the executor of an estate submits information about the will to the court at the outset of probate and then again every few months as things progress. If there's no information with your local district court clerk’s office, they can usually tell you where the records are kept by looking it up in their database.

The executor's job is to make sure all assets belonging to the deceased are identified and accounted for—including accounts, real estate, and other property—so if you're trying to find someone's will, look them up on Google or elsewhere and see what comes up; if it looks like there's a lot of information about them or their work online, including social media pages or profiles linked from those sites, it's a good bet they're still serving as executor for at least one estate. A little detective work can go a long way towards helping you find out what you need to know. When you need a lawyer to help with probate, call this law firm for a free consultation:
